HAMPDEN COUNTY DA ADDRESSES NEW ENGLAND SERIAL KILLER RUMORS AFTER SPRINGFIELD DISCOVERY

The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts has responded to growing rumors of a potential New England serial killer following the discovery of a woman’s body off a bike path in Springfield on Tuesday. This marks the eighth death in the region since March, raising concerns among residents and online communities.

ANTHONY GULLUNI, the Hampden County District Attorney, emphasized that his office is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. “Our hearts go out to the families who are grieving,” GULLUNI stated. He urged the public to remain cautious of misinformation circulating on social media, which could hinder active investigations and create unnecessary panic.

“We are actively working every lead and deploying every available resource,” GULLUNI added. “At this time, there is no indication that these incidents are connected to each other or are part of a larger public safety threat.”

The woman’s cause of death remains unclear, and the local medical examiner is performing an autopsy. Authorities have not yet established any connection between the eight deaths reported across Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island between March and April.

The Springfield Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted by calling the Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 or texting CRIMES (2-7-4-6-3-7) with the keyword SOLVE followed by the tip.

Rumors of a serial killer began circulating on a Facebook group originally named “New England Serial Killer,” which has since been renamed due to platform regulations. The group, now with 66,700 members, has seen a surge in activity, with nearly 20,000 new members joining this month. Google search data also shows a spike in queries for “New England serial killer” around April 7.

Human remains have been discovered in multiple locations, including New Haven, Norwalk, Groton, and Killingly in Connecticut; Foster, Rhode Island; and Framingham, Plymouth, and Springfield in Massachusetts. While some social media users speculate these findings could indicate a serial killer, Connecticut State Police have stated there is no evidence linking the cases or suggesting a public threat.

“As always, our focus is on seeking justice, supporting victims and their families, and maintaining the safety of our community,” the DA’s office reiterated.
