A vicious hatchet attack in Tucson, Arizona, has left 32-year-old JACOB COUCH on life support, with officials stating he is not expected to recover. The alleged assailant, DANIEL MICHAEL, 25, has been charged with felony assault and is being held on a $1 million cash bond pending further court proceedings.
The incident occurred on April 5 at approximately 10 a.m. at a bus stop just two miles from the University of Arizona campus and blocks away from Tucson Police Headquarters. JACOB COUCH and his wife, KRISTEN COUCH, were traveling cross-country back to their hometown of Arab, Alabama, after mourning the loss of their stillborn son in California. According to investigators, Michael allegedly approached the couple, initiated a confrontation, and attacked JACOB COUCH from behind with a hatchet, nearly decapitating him.
LUKE COUCH, the victim’s younger brother, described the attack as “senseless” and emphasized that his brother “did not deserve this.” He told Fox News Digital, “My brother was attacked from behind while he was bent over. That is not self-defense.” Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to support claims of self-defense.
Despite limited brain function due to severe blood loss, JACOB COUCH has shown slight signs of consciousness in recent days. However, doctors have given the family little hope for his recovery. LUKE COUCH urged the public to continue praying for his brother while calling for swift justice. “We will not let this slip through the cracks as a family,” he said. “Please do not let this man get out and do this again.”
The Tucson Police Department stated that bystanders attempted to render aid before officers took over lifesaving efforts. Michael was arrested three days later after investigators identified him through evidence and surveillance images. A search warrant executed at his home yielded additional evidence.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover medical and lodging expenses.
LUKE COUCH also expressed concern about public safety in Tucson, stating, “This country is not as safe as we thought. Please don’t let these criminals think they can just get away with this.”
The case has drawn national attention, with the community rallying behind the Couch family during this heartbreaking time. Michael’s next court hearing is scheduled for the end of the month.
