Harvard University has taken legal action against the Trump administration, filing a lawsuit to challenge the administration’s decision to withhold billions of dollars in federal research funding. The lawsuit, announced by Harvard President ALAN GARBER on social media platform X, asserts that the funding freeze is both unlawful and exceeds governmental authority.
The dispute escalated rapidly after reports emerged that the Trump administration planned to cut an additional $1 billion in federal grants and contracts to Harvard, on top of the $2.2 billion reduction announced last week. Sources familiar with the matter, as reported by *The Wall Street Journal*, revealed that the $1 billion cut targets Harvard’s health research funding.
In a 51-page complaint, Harvard accused the Trump administration of using the funding freeze as leverage to pressure the institution into restructuring its governance, academic programs, and hiring practices. The university’s legal team argued that the freeze violates the First Amendment by imposing viewpoint-based conditions on federal funding. They emphasized that the move jeopardizes Harvard’s ability to pursue critical medical breakthroughs, scientific discoveries, and innovative solutions.
DONALD TRUMP, however, has been vocal in his criticism of Harvard, accusing the institution of losing its way and no longer deserving federal support. In a recent social media post, Trump lambasted Harvard, claiming it hires “woke, Radical Left, idiots and ‘birdbrains’ who are only capable of teaching FAILURE to students and so-called ‘future leaders.’” He also referenced recent controversies involving Harvard’s former president, further asserting that the university “teaches Hate and Stupidity” and should no longer receive federal funds.
The lawsuit marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tension between Harvard and the Trump administration. Harvard’s legal team contends that the administration’s actions threaten the autonomy of academic institutions and their ability to conduct groundbreaking research.
