A former federal prosecutor has raised concerns over the handling of the investigation into the golf cart incident involving NFL legend JOHN ELWAY. The incident, which occurred at the Madison Club in La Quina, California, resulted in the death of JEFFREY SPERBECK, a 62-year-old close friend and agent of Elway.
According to a Cal Fire spokesperson, the incident took place on March 26 at 6:50 PM. Sperbeck fell off the back of a golf cart, sustaining serious injuries. He was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he passed away on Wednesday. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has since opened an investigation into the matter, though no charges have been filed against Elway.
HARVEY STEINBERG, a Denver-based attorney, has been retained by Elway. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office stated in a social media post that the incident appears to be a tragic accident. However, former Assistant U.S. Attorney NEAMA RAHMANI has questioned the delay in the sheriff’s office being informed about the incident, suggesting that the department may not be fully transparent or efficient in its handling of the case.
Rahmani noted that it is unusual for law enforcement not to respond to such an incident immediately. Riverside County Sheriff CHAD BIANCO responded to Rahmani’s comments, stating that the department would take appropriate action based on the investigation’s outcome.
Elway publicly expressed his grief over Sperbeck’s passing, describing him as a close friend and business partner. Sperbeck’s family also released a statement, expressing their profound loss and gratitude for the support they have received.
Elway and Sperbeck had been friends since 1990, with Sperbeck managing Elway’s career and representing other NFL legends like RONNIE LOTT and JIM PLUNKETT. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as it progresses.
