Man Charged with Murder Following Tragic Death of Chicago Fire Captain David Meyer

CHICAGO — A 44-year-old man, Charles Green, has been charged with murder in connection with a devastating garage fire that claimed the life of Chicago Fire Department (CFD) Captain David Meyer on Wednesday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the city and the firefighting community.

Patrick Cleary, President of Chicago Fire Union Local 2, stated that evidence strongly suggests Green was responsible for igniting the blaze. The fire, reported just after 4 a.m., quickly escalated, leading to the collapse of the garage during salvage and overhaul operations, according to CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

A mayday alarm was issued at approximately 4:20 a.m., and Meyer, 54, was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The seasoned firefighter, a 28-year veteran of the CFD, was assigned to Truck 29 on the city’s west side and had previously served as a lieutenant on Truck 35.

Meyer is survived by his parents, wife, three daughters, and one son. In a heartwarming gesture, University of Iowa Police assisted one of Meyer’s daughters, who is a student at the university, in returning home swiftly to be with her family.

“This is a profound loss for the Chicago Fire Department and the entire city,” said Commissioner Nance-Holt. “Captain Meyer dedicated his life to serving others, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

The tragic incident underscores the dangers faced by first responders daily. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a hero whose legacy of bravery and dedication will endure.
