The family of GRANT BARR, a 37-year-old New York banker who vanished while on vacation in Spain over a month ago, has confirmed that the remains found on a beach belong to him. MICHAEL BARR, Grant’s father, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post, expressing his profound grief.
“It is with profound sadness that I speak of the passing of my youngest son, GRANT,” MICHAEL BARR wrote.
GRANT BARR was staying with friends and relatives in Estepona on the Costa del Sol when he disappeared on January 28, according to The Spanish Eye. His pants and passport were found near a beach at a resort shortly after he was reported missing, prompting an extensive search.
On March 3, BARR‘s body washed ashore, but his family was not notified until April 4, when DNA testing confirmed the identity of the remains. MICHAEL BARR said the confirmation was devastating. “As a father, my world will never be the same; the same may be true for all who knew and loved him,” he wrote.
GRANT BARR had traveled to Spain for a sailing getaway following a difficult breakup. His father described him as an adventurous spirit with a “gigantic thirst for life,” noting his passion for sailing, skydiving, and working toward his pilot’s license.
Authorities initially ruled his cause of death as drowning, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. JAMES BARR, Grant’s brother, expressed frustration over the delayed notification, stating, “It means the last time we were all there searching for two weeks, he was already found. However, they didn’t even suggest that there was something they were looking into.”
GRANT BARR‘s remains were released on April 4 after a week of coordination between the courts and the coroner’s office.
GRANT BARR worked at The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation and had previously been employed at Citibank, according to his LinkedIn profile. In a statement to Fox News Digital, a BNY spokesperson said, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague, GRANT BARR. On behalf of Grant’s coworkers and the entire BNY team, we wish to express our deepest sympathies to his family and will be supporting them at this incredibly difficult time.”
The U.S. Department of State also confirmed BARR‘s passing, offering “our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss.”
Spain’s Guardia Civil and Policia Nacional have not publicly commented on the case.
