U.S. Government Denies Eavesdropping on LUIGI MANGIONE’s Jailhouse Calls in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case

The U.S. government has refuted allegations of eavesdropping on recorded jailhouse calls involving LUIGI MANGIONE, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO BRIAN THOMPSON. In a Monday court filing, federal prosecutors denied claims by Mangione’s defense team that officials shared his calls with the New York County Attorney’s Office (DANY).

KAREN FRIEDMAN AGNIFILO, Mangione’s New York-based defense attorney, asserted during his Friday arraignment that one of his jailhouse calls with her was recorded and accessed by a DANY team member. She noted that the DANY office informed her that one person had listened to the call.

Federal prosecutors clarified that no one at DANY or the government “eavesdropped” on Mangione in real time. They emphasized that recording jail calls is a standard practice in federal and state facilities, with both parties notified of the monitoring.

Prosecutors explained that several calls between Mangione and AGNIFILO were provided to the government by the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) and subsequently shared with DANY. This occurred because Mangione used a recorded and monitored jail line—not one designated for attorney calls—and AGNIFILO used a phone number not identified as belonging to counsel, bypassing MDC’s filtering process for attorney-client communications.

The government stated that no member of the federal prosecution team has listened to any attorney-client call. All such recordings have been segregated to prevent further access.

MDC’s call system, Trufone, automatically notifies users that calls are recorded and monitored. The government has received two sets of recordings in the Mangione case from MDC, which were then provided to DANY.

On April 22, 2025, a DANY paralegal reviewing the recordings encountered a call between Mangione and AGNIFILO, recognized it as an attorney-client conversation, and immediately stopped listening. The issue was reported to the DANY prosecution team, who promptly notified AGNIFILO and a government prosecutor. The government has since segregated the recording to prevent further access, and DANY has taken similar measures.

LUIGI MANGIONE pleaded not guilty to federal charges on April 25 in connection with the December 4, 2024, murder of BRIAN THOMPSON. Mangione was indicted in the Southern District of New York on charges of stalking, murder, and using electronic communications, interstate travel, and a firearm in the alleged killing.

Prosecutors believe Mangione shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel during UnitedHealthcare’s annual shareholder conference, intending to send a message to the healthcare industry. A manifesto found on Mangione at the time of his arrest supports this theory.

If convicted of murder through the use of a firearm, Mangione could face the death penalty.
