U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy Witnesses Violent Attack on WMATA Officer in D.C.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy encountered a disturbing incident Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C., when a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) police officer was violently assaulted. Duffy detailed the event in an X post, explaining that he was en route to the Navy Yard Metro Station when his staff informed him of the stabbing. The officer was allegedly attacked with a sharp metal object by a suspect who had refused to pay fare at the station.

The WMATA later confirmed the incident to Fox News Digital, clarifying that the officer sustained lacerations and puncture wounds to the face. The suspect was promptly detained by nearby officers, arrested, and the weapon was recovered. The individual is expected to face assault charges and prosecution.

Sean Duffy, who was preparing to discuss transit safety at the time, described the incident as “horrible” on social media. “My thoughts are with his family, and we pray for his speedy recovery,” he wrote. “These acts of senseless violence are exactly why @USDOT is fighting to re-secure our transit systems and crack down on violent crime.”

Duffy also shared photos of himself interacting with police officers and expressed relief that the victim was in good spirits following the attack. “Thankfully, the officer who was attacked was in good spirits after the incident,” he wrote. “The @USDOT security detail was able to provide him first aid. He said he gets bitten, beaten, and attacked almost every day.”

The secretary extended his gratitude to WMATA officers, emphasizing their bravery and dedication. “My thanks go out to him and all the brave officers of @MetroTransitPD,” he added. “They put their lives on the line each and every day to keep us safe. Violence against them cannot be tolerated, and we must do better.”

In a video shared shortly after the incident, Duffy appeared visibly shaken. “I was gonna go down and talk to people right in the subway, talk about the safety and cleanliness,” he explained. “But before I was going to go down, one of our Metro cops was stabbed in the face by someone down in the system. Again, unacceptable. Our officers, our people deserve to be treated better.”

Duffy also announced plans to meet with the WMATA CEO to address the incident and reinforce safety measures across transit systems.
