A Venezuelan national, identified as YONAIKER GALLEGOS, an alleged leader of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, was arrested in Los Angeles last week, according to a senior Trump administration official. The arrest was confirmed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
Gallegos, who had been using the alias YONIAKER RAFAEL MARTINEZ-RAMOS, was initially in local custody in Los Angeles County on misdemeanor charges related to blank checks and possession of a fraudulent government ID. HSI agents, upon reviewing the items in his possession during his initial arrest, suspected that Martinez-Ramos was a false identity.
On April 23, HSI’s National Gang Unit positively identified him as YONAIKER GALLEGOS after analyzing his tattoos, booking photos, and social media posts. Facial recognition technology further confirmed his true identity. A video from Gallegos’ social media, shared with Fox News, allegedly showed him brandishing grenades and a rifle, raising concerns about his involvement in violent activities.
Gallegos was taken into federal custody on April 25 for Title 8 immigration violations. Authorities have identified him as a key leader of the Tren de Aragua gang operating in California. The arrest was a result of coordinated efforts between HSI Los Angeles and state and local law enforcement agencies.
The Tren de Aragua gang, known for its violent tactics, has been linked to undermining public safety in the U.S., according to an FBI assessment. This arrest marks a significant step in addressing the gang’s influence and activities within the country.
