In a tragic incident at Florida State University (FSU) on Thursday, two individuals lost their lives during a mass shooting. The victims have been identified as ROBERT MORALES and TIRU CHABBA, both cherished family men and employees in the food service industry. The shooting, which occurred just before noon in Tallahassee, also left six others injured, all of whom are expected to recover fully.
The suspect, PHOENIX IKNER, a 20-year-old FSU student and stepson of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputy, was shot by Tallahassee police after failing to comply with their commands. Authorities revealed that Ikner used his mother’s weapon in the attack.
ROBERT MORALES, a former assistant football coach at Leon High School, was remembered by the school’s athletics department as a dedicated and passionate mentor. “Coach Morales was a beloved member of our athletic community and served as an assistant coach for Leon Football with dedication, integrity, and a true passion for mentoring young athletes,” the school stated. “His commitment to the game and to shaping the lives of his players extended far beyond the field.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Morales’ family, raising over $31,000 by Friday afternoon. The fundraiser, organized by friends of his wife, BETTY MORALES, aims to provide financial assistance during this difficult time.
TIRU CHABBA, a 45-year-old father of two from Greenville, South Carolina, was on the FSU campus working for a campus vendor when the tragedy unfolded. The Strom Law Firm, representing Chabba’s family, issued a statement confirming his death. “Tiru Chabba’s family is going through the unimaginable now. Instead of hiding Easter eggs and visiting with friends and family, they’re living a nightmare where this loving father and devoted husband was stolen from them in an act of senseless and preventable violence,” the firm wrote.
BAKARI SELLERS, a national civil rights attorney with Strom Law, announced on Twitter that he and colleague JIM BANNISTER will represent Chabba’s family in future legal proceedings. “He was a husband and father whose life was tragically taken on the campus of Florida State University this week,” Sellers wrote. “We are prayerful for a complete and thorough investigation and pray for all families affected.”
Aramark Collegiate Hospitality, where Chabba served as a regional vice president, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “We are heartbroken to confirm that an Aramark employee was among those killed at FSU yesterday in that senseless act of violence,” the company stated. “Our deepest sympathies are with the family and our entire Aramark community.”
In response to the shooting, FSU canceled classes through Friday and athletic events through the weekend. The university also held a vigil for the victims at Langford Green in front of the Unconquered Statue on Friday evening.
