MIAMI BEACH, FL – For the second consecutive year, Miami Beach has successfully curbed spring break crime, thanks to a viral reality TV-themed public service announcement. The city’s innovative “Reality Check” campaign, spearheaded by Mayor STEVEN MEINER, has left residents and local businesses grateful for the transformative efforts.
STEVEN MEINER, who took office in late 2023, inherited a city plagued by years of spring break chaos that disrupted local businesses and frustrated residents. In 2025, the city launched the “Reality Check” campaign in collaboration with city, county, and state authorities to restore order during the spring break season.
“We had [in] the prior years literally killings on our street,” MEINER told Fox News Digital. “We had other shootings, basically modified stampedes, just from literally a level of lawlessness and chaos – jumping on police cars – it was just not tolerable.”
The “Reality Check” video, which has garnered over 53,000 views since its release on February 4, features a cast of spring break characters eager to cause havoc in Miami Beach. However, they are quickly disillusioned as they discover the city’s strict enforcement of rules, including volume limits on beach speakers, citywide DUI checkpoints, and a 6 p.m. curfew. Additionally, $100 parking fees made it cost-prohibitive for some partiers to access popular hotspots.
The city’s efforts were bolstered by the support of state troopers and county police, who worked alongside local law enforcement to maintain order. “I’d come back to Miami Beach, just not for spring break,” one cast member remarks at the end of the video.
The results have been nothing short of remarkable. “The results have been phenomenal,” MEINER said. “No killings, no shootings, no major incidents, no stampedes. I can tell you … literally from the hoteliers to restaurants to businesses, everyone’s appreciative. And literally, almost universally, our businesses are very appreciative of the steps we took, and [it was] a major success for our city.”
Residents have also expressed their gratitude. “No matter where you go in our city, even people who live, you know, six, seven miles away from where the activity took place, nobody wanted to see their city viewed in a negative light. They’re so appreciative,” MEINER added.
Miami Beach is not alone in its efforts to shed its chaotic spring break reputation. Panama City Beach Mayor STUART TETTEMER also highlighted his city’s aggressive measures to deter crime during the spring break period. “Panama City Beach has taken aggressive steps to maintain order during the Spring Break period, including targeted evening beach closures, enhanced enforcement zones, mutual aid partnerships, and public-private screening efforts at Pier Park,” TETTEMER told Fox News Digital. “PCB is committed to law and order, acting swiftly with law enforcement to keep the community safe and family-friendly, and working with responsible businesses to ensure the unruly spring break legacy stays in the past.”
The success of Miami Beach’s “Reality Check” campaign serves as a model for other cities grappling with spring break-related challenges, proving that innovative strategies and strict enforcement can restore order and safety.
