$ynergyCrashes: Fatal Incident Involving Unreturned U-Haul Near University of Delaware

A tragic incident unfolded near the University of Delaware’s campus on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in at least one fatality and multiple injuries. The crash involved an unreturned U-Haul rental van that struck several pedestrians and a police vehicle, according to authorities.

The Newark, Delaware Police Department reported that officers noticed the rented U-Haul van parked on the street around 4:30 p.m. The vehicle had been reported as an unauthorized use vehicle the previous day. The van was initially rented but was not returned by its due date on March 18.

As officers attempted to apprehend the two suspects inside the van, the individuals fled the scene, driving over a curb and striking a marked police vehicle. The suspects then sped away at a high rate of speed, ignoring officer commands. The Newark Police did not engage in a pursuit and remained in the shopping center.

During their escape, the van struck two pedestrians standing near a parked vehicle before colliding with multiple parked cars, ultimately becoming disabled. Responding officers provided first aid to the injured pedestrians. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while another sustained serious injuries. Three others were transported to a nearby emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries, and three additional individuals were treated for minor injuries but declined further medical attention.

The driver and passenger of the U-Haul were apprehended. The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Newark Police Department has closed the area as the Traffic Unit investigates the crash. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the vicinity and use alternate routes.
